Theorizing Pornography ׀ Die Pornografie theoretisieren ׀ Forschungsplattform ab 2015

The objective of this project is the collection and critical, comparative reflection of existing theorizations of pornography. Present research, which is manifold and often scattered across different disciplines is synthesized according to its varying approaches and results and subjected to a methodological critique. Thereby, a corpus of existent theorizations is established for the first time. On this basis, further research on and interpretations of pornography can be developed in a methodologically reflected and context-sensitive way.

The research project consists of two parts: In an empirical first part, a corpus of literature relevant for the research on pornography is compiled: Influential theoretical concepts across disciplinary boundaries are assembled in a comprehensive bibliography. Based on this compilation, the existing, heterogeneous scientific approaches are analyzed according to their theoretical and methodological modi operandi. This enables a critical comparison of so far disconnected approaches. In the second part of the project, these approaches are classified in a comparative glossary: Theorems are reconstructed, contextualized, related to one another, and thereby refocused as useful figures of thought. Additionally, central texts are discussed and made accessible in an commented bibliography. This critical contextualization and refocusing reframes previous, oftentimes unrelated theorizations in a reflected and functionally accessible way. The results of the project (bibliography, comparative glossary, and annotated bibliography) are made available in an expandable online database. With this, we aim at an interactive, bilingual research platform, which simultaneously contributes to scientific networking and theoretical-methodological orientation. According to the transdisciplinary, comparative character of the project, research is conducted in close co-operation with the UC Berkeley (Department of Rhetoric, German Department) and supported by an international board of experts.

Abstract

Ziel dieses Forschungsprojektes ist es, die bestehenden Theoretisierungen von Pornografie zusammen zu tragen und aneinander kritisch zu reflektieren. Das bedeutet, die bisher unternommenen, oftmals verstreuten und vielgestaltigen Annäherungen zu versammeln, nach ihren Zugriffsweisen und Erkenntnissen zu systematisieren und einer methodologischen Kritik zu unterziehen. Dadurch soll erstmalig ein Korpus der bestehenden Theoriearbeit zur Auseinandersetzung mit Pornografie erarbeitet werden, auf dessen Basis eine methoden- und kontextsensible weitere Erforschung und Interpretation forciert werden kann. 

Das Forschungsprojekt ist zweiteilig angelegt: In einem empirisch ausgerichteten Grundlagenteil wird ein Korpus für die Pornografieforschung relevanter Literatur erstellt: Die wirksam gewordenen theoretischen Grundkonzepte werden – über disziplinäre Grenzen hinweg – versammelt und erstmalig in einer umfassenden Bibliografie erfasst. Auf dieser Basis werden die bestehenden, heterogenen wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzungen auf ihre theoretischen und methodologischen Vorgehensweisen hin analysiert. Dadurch wird ein kritischer Abgleich bisher nicht vernetzter Ansätze ermöglicht, der – in einem zweiten, theoretischen Abschnitt – in Form eines komparativen Glossars systematisiert wird: Die Theoreme werden rekonstruiert, kontextualisiert, aneinander geschärft und so als Denkfiguren nutzbar gemacht. Parallel dazu werden die zentralen Basistexte in einer kommentierten Bibliografie erschlossen und diskutiert. Durch diese kritische Verortung und Konturierung wird die bisher geleistete, oftmals unverbundene Theoriearbeit in einer reflektierten und funktional anschlussfähigen Form zugänglich gemacht. Die Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojektes (Bibliografie, komparatives Glossar und kommentierte Bibliografie) werden dazu im Rahmen einer erweiterbaren Online-Datenbank zur Verfügung gestellt. Angestrebt wird eine interaktive, zweisprachige Forschungsplattform, die gleichermaßen einen Beitrag zur Wissenschaftsvernetzung und einer theoretisch-methodischen Orientierung leistet. Entsprechend der transdisziplinären, komparativen Ausrichtung des Projektes wird es in enger Kooperation mit der UC Berkeley (Department of Rhetoric, German Department) durchgeführt und von einem international besetzten Board von Expert_innen begleitet.
